Description

Description

The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA) is evaluating advanced treatment options to improve removal of 1,4-dioxane from the region's drinking water supply. The options include advanced oxidation process upgrades, foam fractionation with photocatalytic destruction, and propane-based bioremediation. The advanced oxidation upgrade involves adding a higher intensity UV light system with chlorine to enhance contaminant breakdown, estimated to remove about 90% of 1,4-dioxane at a capital cost of around $17 million. Foam fractionation is experimental but promising, while propane bioremediation is a simpler, potentially cheaper option requiring pilot testing.
