1944 Water Treaty Compliance Water Deliveries

under implementation

The Mexican government will begin delivering water to the United States to address its deficit mandated by the 1944 Water Treaty. The treaty requires Mexico to provide the US with one-third of the surplus from six rivers feeding the Rio Grande over a five-year period, totaling at least 2.158 billion cubic meters. Mexico is set to release 249 million cubic meters starting this week to cover the debt of 986 million cubic meters. The water deliveries come primarily from the Falcon and La Amistad dams, which supply water to 13 border cities on the Mexican side.
