200-MW/400-MWh Battery Energy Storage System Project

Romanian power distributor Premier Energy PLC unveiled the acquisition of a 200-MW/400-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Romania, touted as one of the largest of its kind in Southeast Europe. The ready-to-build project is located near Iasi in the eastern part of the country. Construction works are set to start next year, with commissioning targeted for late 2026 or early 2027. The project development and construction is estimated at about EUR 75 million (USD 86.4 million). Premier Energy is working on securing financing with a major European financial institution. The BESS is expected to benefit from strong intraday price volatility and high balancing costs in regional power markets, especially in Romania, and will support the group's renewable electricity production and supply businesses.
