Description
Description | This project includes the replacement of a single span (30’) timber bridge structure with a two span (60’) timber bridge structure in the community of Crapaud, Prince Edward Island. The existing structure was initially constructed in 1974. Based on inspections over the years the existing structure has a Bridge Condition Index (BCI) of 65.75, which would classify the current structure as being in fair condition. The foundational elements of the bridge are beginning to fail and replacement is the best option. The scope of work includes removing existing infrastructure and creating a smaller causeway. New piles, stringers and decking will be constructed. New foreslopes for the four embankments will be constructed and lined with rip rap rock. This will allow the bridge structure to be constructed at a 1.1 metre higher elevation and will also provide protection from future erosion. The increase in elevation will provide greater capacity of water to flow through the structure during extreme weather events and high tides. As is the case in other structures across Prince Edward Island climate change is greatly affecting the Provinces bridge infrastructure. All designs are being completed with climate change as a major component in the design process. The project aims to improve the structural foundational elements of the bridge and allow improved access to industries in the area such as agriculture and tourism. The BCI of the replacement structure will be 100 once it is completed. The new structure will have a 75 year design life as per the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) requirements. Investments to bridge infrastructure in rural Prince Edward Island will contribute to the success of those communities. Among the priorities of our Department we have been working hard in developing a plan to address the infrastructure needs for rural Islanders while working with federal partners. |
