2021-22 Active Transportation Road Widening

This project consists of construction of paved shoulders for approximately 5.01 kilometres across Prince Edward Island to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The scope of work will include cold planing the outside wheel path of the existing roadway and approximatley 1.0-1.5 metres of the existing granular shoulder. This section would then be filled with asphalt base (55mm). The entire road surface would then be overlayed with a thin lift of asphalt seal (45mm) to ensure proper water drainage and a smooth transistion. The aim of the project is to reduce transportation emissions and encourage more walking/cycling by constructing safer active transportatoin corridors. The roads chosen in this bundle have a 50% increase in traffic in the summer months. The Department of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy with the support of the Province is commited to improving active transporation across the province to reduce transportation emissions while encouraging more walking, cycling and community transit. Among the priorities of our Department we have been working hard in developing a plan to address active transportation while working with federal partners.
