Description | A 28 km long artificial lake was excavated in the Thar Desert by the Rajasthan state water supply department to serve as a strategic water reserve. The reservoir has a capacity of approximately 1.41 billion litres and a depth of 33 feet. It is lined with a 300 micron thick high-density polyethylene plastic sheet to prevent water infiltration into the sandy soil. The project aims to supply water to 5 million people in the cities of Jaisalmer and Barmer, especially during maintenance shutdowns of the Indira Gandhi Canal, a major water source in the region. |
