Description

Description

Canada-based green hydrogen joint venture Exploits Valley Renewable Energy Corporation (EVREC) has filed an environmental impact statement (EIS) for a project integrating over 3 GW of onshore wind power, green hydrogen, and green ammonia production in Central Newfoundland. The green energy hub near Botwood is expected to produce about 180,000 tonnes per year of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) hydrogen or up to 1 million tonnes per year of RFNBO ammonia for export markets. The project is a joint venture between France’s EDF Group and Canadian energy transition developer Abraxas Power Corp, established in late 2024. It is one of Canada's most advanced wind-hydrogen developments and the only one to secure an extension of Crown land reserves from the Newfoundland and Labrador province due to its maturity and fee payments. The EIS was prepared in line with provincial guidelines and includes technical, environmental, and socio-economic studies. The project targets ammonia buyers in Europe, leveraging proximity to Botwood’s deep-water port, the closest North American deep-water harbour to Europe.
