Description
Description | The second phase to construct a pair of protected bike lanes is set to begin along 31st Avenue from Steinway Street to 51st Street in Queens, New York City. The project will create a two-way bike lane, forming a 'bike boulevard' from the waterfront at Vernon Boulevard into Woodside. The bike boulevard aims to increase safety for bikers, pedestrians, and drivers by improving visibility at intersections, expanding pedestrian space, and enhancing traffic flow. As part of the project, 31st Avenue will become a one-way road with eastbound traffic allowed between Steinway Street and 43rd Street, and westbound traffic allowed from 43rd Street to 51st Street. A traffic diverter will be built at the intersection of 31st Avenue and 43rd Street to improve visibility for pedestrians and cyclists. The NYC Department of Transportation is also considering adjustments from the first phase, including additional loading zones and a traffic light. The first phase faced a halt due to concerns from local businesses and residents about loading zones and parking. The second phase is set to begin later in 2026. |
