3.2 GW Coal Power Project in Rajasthan

A proposed 3.2 gigawatt coal-fired power project in Rajasthan, India's largest solar power producing state, was blocked by the Rajasthan Electricity Regulatory Commission for the second time. The regulator requested state utilities to reassess demand and capacity needs before proceeding. The project was initially refused permission due to conflicts with clean energy goals and lack of justification under demand forecasts. The state power utility Rajasthan Urja Vikas & IT Services Ltd filed a review petition arguing the need for new capacity to meet rising round-the-clock demand, but the regulator disposed of the petition without clearing the project. The regulator also directed state utilities to carry out proper resource planning to assess coal power needs.
