Description

The Braunschweig International Film Festival (BIFF) is an annual 7-day film festival held in November. The focus is on young European cinema and documentaries on sustainability and music. Around 90 feature-length films and 100 short films are shown during the festival week. BIFF awards 10 film prizes with a total value of €70,500. These include Die EUROPA - a European acting prize. In recent years, it has been awarded to renowned actors such as Udo Kier, Senta Berger, Stellan Skarsgård, Mads Mikkelsen and John Hurt. One of the highlights of the festival week is definitely the opening film concert, which is presented together with the Braunschweig State Orchestra. BIFF has also put together a wide-ranging complementary programme with panel discussions on social issues, talks with filmmakers, composers and experts, school and industry events, a public awards ceremony and a party. BIFF clearly sees itself as a festival for the public - film and cinema as an event for society as a whole. In recent years, the BIFF has expanded its year-round programme of events. Thanks to co-operation with local associations and supra-regional institutions, the BIFF is regularly active in the city. In addition, there are further events throughout the year with another 25 features and 35 short films. Started by a handful of cinema enthusiasts it has developed into an audience festival for more than 20,000 visitors. Around 260 film industry professionals – filmmakers, actors, producers, composers, press – attend the festival.
