50Hertz grid modernisation project in central Germany

Transmission system operator (TSO) 50Hertz has started the construction of a 380 kV overhead line in the federal state of Thuringia in central Germany, replacing an existing 220 kV overhead line built in 1988 along a section of about 74 km between the Wolkramshausen substation near Nordhausen and Vieselbach near Erfurt. The new line will increase the current-carrying capacity to 4,000 amperes per three-phase system and is expected to be operational in 2028, after which the old line will be dismantled. The project supports the expansion of the high-voltage network, improves supply security, and contributes to the energy transition by transporting renewable energy.
