Description
Description | From 2027 onwards, Digital Rail Operations and mobile connectivity for passengers in trains up to 3-5 Gbps alongside the tracks will shift from GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway) to Future Rail Mobile Communication Systems (FRMCS). This is a mobile communication system based on 5G,which will provide reliable, low-latency, mission-critical communications for performance and railway critical applications. It is also expected to enable a greater ability to exploit railway system data to create a more intelligent and improved “data-driven” railway, increasing operational safety, performance and efficiency. 5GiRa project is implemented along cross-border track that runs from Arnhem to Emmerich part of the corridor Amsterdam-Frankfurt, which belongs to the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) Rhine-Alpine rail corridor and as such interesting for FRMCS. The goal of the 5GiRa project is to assess the potential of FRMCS and Gigabit train for enhanced rail connectivity for passengers and digital train operations as key enablers for carbon-free mobility and a competitive rail sector across EU borders. The study will provide the first step on the road of the deployment of FRMCS network and improved passenger connections in the next decade. Activities will: - Assess FRMCS and Gigabit use cases; - Conceive architectural concepts, sharing and cooperation models for hybrid usage of public Mobile Network Operators (MNO) and private Railway Mobile Radio (RMR) for FRMCS and Gigabit train; - Develop migration paths from GSM-R to FRMCS leveraging the hybrid architecture approach for a cost-effective, timely and efficient transition; - Define the necessary steps for design and deployment of FRMCS to facilitate the verification and validation of FRMCS in the context of the EU Rail Destination 2 initiative; - Prepare for the implementation of Works in a next phase for nationwide deployment of FRMCS and Gigabit train. |
