Description

Description

The project aims to manufacture 100% flexible electrolysers with battery functionality at a first-of-a-kind 1GW factory in the Port of Rotterdam. The Battolyser® technology unlocks 100% flexible green hydrogen production by combining the functionality of both an electrolyser and a battery. Once in operation at the customer site, the technology will achieve complete greenhouse gas (GHG) emission avoidance compared to traditional grey hydrogen production. The technology goes beyond the current state of the art by offering flexibility, leading to significantly lower hydrogen production costs. The electrolyser requires only recyclable and abundant materials (iron, Class-2 nickel) rather than costly critical raw materials, ensuring sustainability and resilience against supply chain disruptions. It uses patented innovations in advanced stack design for electrical storage, hydrogen production, and specialised electrodes. Battolyser® has thus demonstrated its industrial applicability and superior performance by achieving around 80% efficiency in pilot projects. The project enables the leveraging of renewable energy use to avoid GHG emissions. Its widespread adoption could avoid 8.65 million tonnes of GHG emissions, the CO2 equivalent to the yearly GHG emissions of Cyprus. Its potential to contribute to Europe’s GHG reduction targets for 2030 and 2050 is significant. The project will also contribute to Europe’s targets for renewable energy deployment, as the operation of electrolysers will require renewable energy projects. More efficient integration of intermittent energy sources like wind and solar will contribute to lower hydrogen costs and enable its uptake in line with European objectives for renewable hydrogen consumption in industry and transport. In addition, the project contributes to the Net-Zero Industry Act, notably with its benchmark for at least 40% of annual deployment needs of electrolysers to be delivered by a manufacturer based in Europe. The project thus aligns with the European’s industrial strategy and climate goals. The project will have a long-lasting impact on the regional economy in three ways. First, located in the Port of Rotterdam, the factory is set to create a cumulative amount of 3 000 yearly jobs by 2030, fostering indirect jobs and a robust value chain. Additional efforts to contribute to the hydrogen economy include collaborations with local schools and dedicated training programmes aligned with the European Hydrogen Skills Strategy, ensuring workforce preparedness. Moreover, the project will strengthen the local hydrogen economy through strategic partnerships with regional and European suppliers. By doing so, the project will create an attractive business environment for similar companies. Finally, the project partners with universities, such as TU Delft, to foster research on fundamental electrolyser technology. The project plans for further deployment across Europe; appropriate locations for additional Battolyser® factories have already been identified and assessed.
