Description

Description

The STASIS project will develop methods to improve the management of environmentally hazardous sulphide soil, as well as possibilities for intermediate storage and improved landfilling techniques. Large areas of coastal land on both sides of Kvarken and the Gulf of Bothnia are old seabeds. These ancient marine sediments have risen from the sea due to the land rise and are very sulphide rich. In infrastructure construction, large volumes of acid sulphide soil are excavated, and these shaft masses should be taken care of quickly to prevent oxidation. When sulphides are exposed to the oxygen of the atmosphere, oxidation occurs with, among other things, sulphuric acid as a reaction product. The acidic and metal-rich drainage water eventually reaches watercourses with negative consequences, in the worst case there is an extensive fish death in affected watercourses. The project develops methods to enable improved solutions for on-site sulphide soil management, as well as intermediate storage facilities and improved landfilling techniques. Since the problem is the same on the Finnish and Swedish sides, there are good opportunities to bring together these complementary and necessary skills and experiences.
