It's a 40km trunk road running across the Island of Anglesey (Ynys Môn) in North Wales. The road is the main route to Holyhead, the principal port linking Britain to Ireland and forms part of the strategic E22 Euroroute, which stretches from the Baltic coast to Dublin. The concession includes operation and maintenance of the route from Bangor on the mainland to Holyhead, part crossing the Menai Straits along the Britannia Bridge. This also includes the secondary loop of the original A5 Menai Crossing using the historic Grade 1 listed Menai Bridge (an additional 6km). UK Highways A55 is a consortium comprising John Laing and Carillion Private Finance, which designed, built, financed and now operates the road. The concession period extends to 30 years. The A55 was a landmark deal at the time (1998), financial close being concluded within two months of selection of UK Highways as preferred bidder.
