Description

Description

This project contains construction measures which are part of the Global Project Karlsruhe-Basel new-build and upgraded line project (“ABS/NBS Karlsruhe-Basel”). The Karlsruhe-Basel line is a 200 km section of the 1,200 km Rotterdam-Cologne-Basel-Milan-Genoa corridor, which is an important freight and trade route through Europe. It is part of the Trans-European Rhine-Alpine Core Network Corridor and is a cross-border link within the meaning of Annex III of the CEF regulation ((EU) 2021/1153). The existing line dates back to the 19th century and includes tight curves, which force trains to reduce speed to 70 km/h at times. As a result, the route no longer meets the today’s demands for fast rail transport. Thanks to the Global Project Karlsruhe-Basel, the route will be upgraded to include two additional tracks. These additional tracks will be built directly next to the existing tracks or as a new route, which will run near the existing motorway in some places. The upgraded or new-build Karlsruhe-Basel route will relieve pressure mainly on the existing Rhine Valley Railway line. In the future, the separation of traffic flows will prevent delays and allow more cargo to be shifted from road to rail. This will lead to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Trains will be able to travel at higher speeds on all tracks: short-distance and freight trains at a maximum speed of 160 km/h, and high-speed trains with a speed of 200-250 km/h, depending on their design and equipment. Climate protection is an inherent part of Deutsche Bahn’s strategy. During the construction and upgrading of the route, Deutsche Bahn will focus on preserving a healthy ecosystem. Many environmental measures will compensate for disturbance to the environment, and new habitats will be created for flora and fauna. Noise control and vibration reduction measures are part of the project.
