Addition of Sixth Combustion Turbine at Sherwood J. Smith Jr. Energy Complex

Duke Energy plans to add a sixth natural gas combustion turbine at the Sherwood J. Smith Jr. Energy Complex in Richmond County, North Carolina. The complex currently has two combined cycle units generating 1,250 megawatts and five combustion turbines with a total capacity of 1,000 megawatts. The new turbine will use modern technology to reduce emissions, utilize existing natural gas supply without requiring a new pipeline, and include natural gas sourced from hog farms in the state. The project aims to support growing energy needs across the state and region, including commercial, economic development, and residential growth.
