Description

Description

The Jean Monnet Chair  in European Governance to be held by Associate Professor of Political Science and European Politics Sofia A. Perez will further the Jean Monnet objective of advancing excellence in teaching and research on the EU in higher education, as well as Boston University objective of preparing students for the challenges of a changing world, one in which the European Union represents one of the main global actors. With the support of the Jean Monnet grant, Professor Perez will advance Boston’s University’s long-standing role in allowing students to pursue European Studies and raising the EU’s visibility among the wider public in the United States. The CSE  has played an important role in advancing these objectives in the Boston area by offering an extensive set of courses in European Studies and offering events open to the public on the EUs role as a leading economic and humanitarian actor.  This application for the Jean Monnet Chair is intended to allow Professor Perez to expand our current course offerings in European Studies in the area of Political Economy, integrating current challenges such as the green an digital transitions into this area. She will also carry out a multiyear research project on EU policy and policy alternatives in promoting the Green and Digital transition, two of the EU’s strategic priorities. The project focuses on ways to maximize synergies between environmental and digital development policies and the EU’s goal of promoting the competitiveness of its firms, proposing a wider concept of “industrial policy” for the current age. It also considers the role of financial markets and regulation of these markets in the pursuit of the EU's dual transition goals.
