AES singed an agreement in January 2000 to acquire control of three electric generating facilities in the Republic of Georgia with a combined capacity of 823 MW. AES Gardabani Holdings BV purchased the 600 MW Gardabani thermal power plant which consists of two 300 MW supercritical gas and oil-fired units that were constructed in 1990. AES Georgia Holdings BV acquired 25-year management contract for Khrami I (113 MW) and II (110 MV) hydroelectric power stations, which have a combined capacity of 223 MW. Approximately one-third of the Gardabani output and the entire output of Khrami I and II will be sold to AES Telasi. AES has paid $6 million in cash - $2.5 million for Khrami I and $3.5 million for Khrami II - for the contracts with a commitment to invest $5 million and $20 million respectively over the next five years. The rehabilitation program of Khrami II, contracted to Ansaldo Energia, is scheduled to be completed in two years. The program, estimated at $23 million, is funded by JBIC. In September 2003, Russian state utility RAO UES signed a 25-year management and lease contract for AO Khramesi. It also acquired the energy distribution company AES Telasi for US$ 23 million. UES also acquired other energy facilities in the republic of Georgia owned by AES: AES Mtkvari, which owns generation unit No. 9 of the Tbilisi TPP.
