The government of Kenya is undertaking a comprehensive redevelopment of Nakuru's Afraha Stadium to transform it into a world-class venue capable of hosting international football and athletics events. The project includes expanding seating capacity from approximately 8,200 to between 13,000 and 15,000 seats in the current phase, with long-term plans to increase to 20,000 seats. Additional upgrades include modern spectator pavilions, high-mast floodlights for night matches, an all-weather tartan athletics track, a football pitch meeting international standards, improved sanitation, secure parking, and other supporting infrastructure to enhance athlete and fan experience. The redevelopment is part of Kenya's preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania and aims to boost sports tourism and economic growth in the region.
