The African Next Voices project is a collaborative initiative involving African computer scientists, linguists, and language specialists to collect and develop large datasets of African languages for AI training. The project focuses on collecting speech data for automatic speech recognition (ASR) across multiple African languages, aiming to create high-quality, ethically collected datasets to enable AI tools to understand and communicate in African languages. The project involves sites in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa and is primarily funded by the Gates Foundation with additional funding from Meta.
