At the end of 2006, the government of Angola awarded a contract to Aggreko Plc. for installation and operation of 30 MW a diesel-fired power plant in Luanda. The contract period was for 2 years. The project became operational in January 2007. Under the agreement, Aggreko supplied electricity to Electricidade de Luanda (EDEL), the distribution grid in the Angolan capital. The plant was named Caminhos de Ferro de Angola. The project was put together by the British operator Aggreko in conjunction with Angola’s national utility Empresa Nacional de Electricidade (ENE), which invested $8 million. The project was part of a plan by the government to meet an increase demand for electricity in Luanda, Angola. As of June 2011, the power plant was still operational. (Aggreko was having trouble getting the Empresa Nacional d'Angola, ENA, to pay for the lease of several generators, concerning several months of an annual contract worth several tens of millions of dollars.)
