Aggreko Embakasi and Eldoret Power Stations

In April 2006, Aggreko plc was awarded a 100 MW temporary power contract with Kenya Electricity Company Ltd (KenGen) for one year. The low water level in 2006 created a scarcity of hydroelectric power and the generation capacity was needed to support the national grid and local industry. Bidding took place in a competitive tender in which five companies submitted final bids. Aggreko won the bid in an open public tender advertised by the local press and the World Bank. The contract had an estimated worth of US $34 million. In October 2007, Aggreko was awarded a two-year extension to the contract. In April 2011, the power plant was still operational but it was operating under a broader supply package won by Aggreko that included a new plant at Lake Naivasha (60MW). The total supply of 140MW (80MW at Embakasi and 60MW at Naivasha) was contracted for 2 years. See project #5502.
