Description

Description

In the first half of 2006, the government of Uganda awarded a contract to Aggreko Plc for installation and operation of a 50 MW diesel-powered temporary power plant in Jinja, Uganda, to supply electricity to Uganda Electrical Transmission Company Ltd (UETCL). The contract period was for two years. The project became operational in late 2006. This contract was an addition to the 50 MW installed by Aggreko in 2005. This meant that the Aggreko supplied an estimated 40% of the country’s total grid capacity. In addition to the power generation contract, Aggreko provided fuel on a pass-through basis for the contract, which was likely to be worth approximately $120m at current prices. The contract was renewed for 6 months in December 2008. In February 2011, the plant was still operational. Jinja power plant was shut down by Aggreko in June 2011 following financial disputes with the government. It was announced that Kiira power plant would not resume operations following the expiry of its contract in June. Power plant was shut down following a financial dispute between Aggreko plc and GoU. Plant was decommissioned as of July 2011 as the government chose not to renew the contract.
