Description

Description

In April 2005 Aggreko Plc (UK) signed an agreement with the Government of Uganda to install and operate a 50 MW temporary diesel power plant at Lugogo, Kampala for three years. The plant would sell power to the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited, the state-owned company that operates the national grid. The project was designed to provide electricity on a temporary basis to prevent load-shedding, until longer term permanent generation could be brought online. Aggreko won the contract over two other final bids (from Cummins Power Generation Ltd and Jacobsen Electro AS) despite not having the lowest bid. The expected cost of the project was US$168 million, of which at least US$120 million would be fuel costs. The plant was designed to be brought online very rapidly, with first electricity available within one week and the full 50 MW within four weeks. Generation began in May 2005. In February 2011, the plant was still operational. Lugogo power plant was temporarily shut down by Aggreko in June 2011 following financial disputes with the government. (update needed) Project was (temporarily?) shut down by Aggreko following financial disputes with the government of Uganda.
