Description

Agrani Satellite Services Limited (ASSL) is a subsidiary of the Essel Group. Other shareholders include Arianespace SA (3%), and Spacecom SA, Alcatel (9.5%). ASSL recieved a license to provide fixed and mobile telephone services and serve as a platform for data transfer via two satellites in July 2001. In addition, it will also cater to applications like TV broadcasting, CTH, remote area communications and Internet. The satellites have a life span of 14 years and have 24 'C' band and 14 'Ku' band transponders. Total project cost is estimated at US$255.5 million. Of this, IDBI has provided a 10-year loan worth US$64.7m at 15% interest rate. ASC Enterprises and Zee Telefilms has underwritten an equity portion worth US$98.8m. The Life Insurance Corporation has sanctioned a sum of US$15m. Alcatel will provide the satellite in third quarter 2003 and was expected to be commercially operational by fourth quarter 2003. It will be launched by Arianespace.
