Description
Description | Energinet has signed grid connection agreements with two Power-to-X projects, which will be connected to Energinet’s transformer station in Endrup near Esbjerg. The two will be both large consumers of electricity and important elements in the work to create balance and stability in the green electricity system of the future. A future where vast amounts of electricity from wind and sun are converted into green fuels has come a little closer after Energinet signed grid connection agreements with two large PtX plants. The contracting parties are H2 Energy and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, respectively, to be connected to Energinet’s transformer station in Endrup near Esbjerg. The two players are thus among the first really big players on the PtX track, but they will be far from the last in the upcoming electrification of Denmark. Towards 2050, Energinet expects that electricity consumption will grow significantly from the current 36 TWh to over 200 TWh – primarily driven forward by developments in the PtX industry. PtX (or Power-to-X) is the common term for processes where electricity is converted into hydrogen via electrolysis or through further processing into other hydrogen-based products. H2 Energy will thus produce hydrogen, while Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners will produce green ammonia at its plant HØST PtX Esbjerg. But at the same time, the facilities can create balance and stability in the green electricity system of the future, where turbines and solar parks only produce when the wind blows and when the sun shines. Because when there is a shortage of power from renewable energy sources, the large amount used for the PtX plants can be retained and used in the electricity grid. Energinet: An enormous task “We face an enormous task to ensure balance and stability in the future electricity system, where the large PtX plants will both become new large consumers of electricity and, at the same time, important pieces in our infrastructure. They allow us to balance the increased amounts of electricity from renewable energy sources, and thus PtX has both great effect and impact. That’s why we engage in close dialogue with the stakeholders involved, and we expect more of this kind of agreement in the coming years,” says Henrik Riis, Energinet’s director of electricity transmission. He adds: “Development of the infrastructure is essential to meet the needs of the future, and this is the task that we must solve together. With the first connection agreements with large PtX facilities, we are taking a new step that creates better conditions for both security of supply and better utilisation of green energy.” Station in Endrup is being expanded Production in PtX facilities is very power-intensive. So when H2Energy and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners independently approached Energinet with the desire to connect their future plant to Energinet’s transmission network, it became necessary to expand the existing 400 kV station in Endrup with areas both north and south of the station, each on approximately 100×250 metres. The extension also contains available fields that can be used for future connections. Endrup is already an important hub in the electricity grid. Here, the Cobra connection between Denmark and the Netherlands is connected to the electricity grid, and the upcoming expansion of the 400 kV high-voltage connection from the Danish-German border to Holstebro also runs through Endrup. The station extension is expected to be commissioned in August 2025. The two plants are expected to be commissioned in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
