The Second Agricultural Machinery Project for Peru will provide a loan of $1.7 million to the SCIPA (Servicio Cooperativo Inter-Americano de Produccion de Alimentos), an agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, to import agricultural machinery. Currently, the SCIPA can only satisfy part of the demand for development and rehabilitation work in the coastal plains with the present stock of equipment. Leveling, which is needed to make the application of irrigation water more efficient, is a large part of the development and rehabilitation work. The SCIPA has unable to meet the demand for leveling work. The project will resolve this problem by procuring machinery necessary to complete the work of the SCIPA. The machinery to be purchased is: 1) 80 crawler tractors; 2) heavy earthmoving equipment; 3) scrapers, graders, and borderers; 4) plows, cultivators, sub-soilers, and threshers; 5) transport equipment; 6) spare parts and shop tools; and 7) contingencies. These new additions will allow the SCIPA to meet the demand for leveling work, rehabilitate old lands, and cultivate new lands.
