A report by Washington State University researchers explores the integration of solar panels with agricultural practices (agrivoltaics) on 87,000 acres of farmland near electrical substations in Washington. This approach aims to generate 8.7 to 17.4 gigawatts of power while maintaining agricultural productivity, particularly benefiting perennial fruit crops like apples and berries. The project includes plans for demonstration and pilot projects, such as one at the WSU Sunrise Research Orchard near Wenatchee, to address challenges like high upfront costs and to promote adoption through policy and financial incentives.
