In December 2009, Aguas de Aracoiaba started operating the water and sewerage systems of the town of Aracoiaba da Serra, located in the state of Sao Paulo. The contract was awarded in November 2009 through a competitive tender with an option to renew for an additional 20 years through direct negotiation. Grupo Aguas do Brasil, a partnership of Brazilian companies Developer, Queiroz Galvao, Trana Construcoes and Construtora Cowan, held 100% of the project company's shares (each of these companies held 20% of the shares in Aguas do Brasil). The concession contract required the private sponsor to expand and rehabilitate the water and sewerage treatment facilities and the water distribution network. The contract bidding criteria and the total investment during the 30-year contract were not publicly available. The municipality had approximately 25 thousand residents in 2009.
