In October 2009, Aguas de Canaa began operating the water and sewerage system of the small town of Nova Canaã do Norte, located in the state of Mato Grosso. The contract mandated rehabiliation and expansion over a period of 30 years. No information regarding tendering or bidding criteria was available. The project sponsors were the Brazilian construction companies Perenge Engenharia e Concessao and Engenharia e Comercio Govic Ltda. The private sponsors committed to invest a total of US$5.8m (BRL 10.5m) during the concession period, four-fifths of which was to be directed to sewerage collection and treatment and the rest to the water system. The sponsors committed to reach 100% coverage in water provision and 70% in sewerage collection. The city had a total population of 13,200 inhabitants in 2009.
