In 2001 the municipality of Maicao (Guarija department) awarded a 30-year concession for the city’s water and sewerage services to private company Aguas de la Peninsula. The contract required the operator expand the existing water network, which covered only 55 percent of the municipality’s residents in 2001. The contract also covered rehabilitation of existing works. By December 2003, the consortium had installed a 30 km water line, over 200 km of distribution network to new connections to more than 7,500 new water connections and over 1,600 sewerage connections. Aguas de la Peninsula was a consortium of Bermad Colombia (a subsidiary of Israeli company Bermad), Colombian Ingenieria Total, and Hydros. The Maicao concession was awarded in February 2001, but operations only commenced in December 2003. Financing of the project was completed with contributions from the Guajira department, which pledged to invest US$6.58mn, Colombia's ministry of environment, investing US$6.17mn, and the city of Maicao US$1.44mn. Aguas de la Peninsula pledged some US$3.9mn to the project. Project stakes for Ingenieria Total and Hydros were not known and were thus excluded because they are construction/engineering firms that likely held a small stake in the project. # connections estimated.
