In June 1998, Concessionaria Aguas de Meriti Ltda, a subsidiary of the Brazilian company Agencia Ambiental, was awarded the 30-year concession contract to provide sewerage collection services to the city of Sao Joao de Meriti, State of Rio de Janeiro. The municipality's population was estimated at 460.7 thousand. Information of the awarding process and criteria for selecting the sponsor was not available. Operations did not commence immediatelly and, in March 2013, the Brazilian companies Aegea Saneamento e Participacoes (51%) - a subsidiary of Grupo Equipav - and Grupo Conasa (49%) acquired Agencia Ambiental's shares of the project company. In July 2015, the project company finally started commercial operations with a target to reach 90% of the city's population with sewerage collection . Water treatment and distribuition as well as sewerage treatment remained under the control of the state-owned company Cedae, although the collection of both the sewerage and water service fees became the responsability of Concessionaria Aguas de Meriti Ltda. The total investment was estimated at US$ 101 million (BRL 337 million) over the concession period.
