In 2001 the Municipality of Saltillo, Mexico, awarded a 25 year concession for its water and sewage services to mixed company Empresa Paramunicipal de Servicios de Aguas Saltillo (Paramunicipal). In July 2001, when the operator took over the water and sewage infrastructure, the company serviced some 147,000 water connections. Paramunicipal committed to invest Euro 81.9 million ($ 72 million) over the concession period. Empresa Paramunicipal de Servicios de Aguas Saltillo was 49 percent owned by Spanish utility company Aguas de Barcelona (Agbar). Agbar acquired its 49 percent stake on July 22nd 2001, when it was declared the winner of a competitive auction launched on March 22nd 2001. The remainder of 51 percent in Paramunicipal was held by the former municipal operator Sistema Municipal de Aguas de Salillo (SIMAS). At the end of 2005, 85 percent of the population had drink¬ing water every day, an increase from 10 percent in 2001. The number of cli¬ents had increased to 164,315. None None
