“ARGOS is a European collaborative project funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF) with the objective of advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies for automated satellite image analysis. The project aims to enhance Europe’s strategic autonomy by developing AI-driven solutions that support the production of imagery intelligence for defence applications. Through a series of challenge campaigns, ARGOS will design, train, and validate a range of AI models tailored to specific use cases. These models will automatically detect, classify, and monitor features in satellite imagery—integrating both optical and radar data—to support more accurate and timely decision-making in defence operations. The technical approach combines high-performance model development with secure deployment in containerized demonstrators. These demonstrators will be tested and delivered in response to simulated operational needs, ensuring readiness for real-world defence environments. ARGOS also includes complementary outputs such as scientific publications and a roadmap for post-project exploitation. The consortium brings together leading European organisations in Earth Observation and Security, enabling broad technological coverage and flexible team formation. By using EU-developed technologies and fostering cross-border cooperation, ARGOS will contribute to strengthening the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base (EDTIB) and support Europe’s operational and technological independence.”
