Description | Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is Türkiye's first nuclear power plant and the largest bilateral investment project between Russia and Türkiye. Located in Mersin province, it features four VVER Generation III+ reactors with a total installed capacity of 4,800 MW, projected to produce approximately 35 billion kWh annually, fulfilling up to 10% of Türkiye's electricity demand. The project began preparatory steps in 2010, faced multiple delays due to political, commercial, and sanction-related challenges, but construction started officially in 2018. The first unit commissioning began in summer 2025, with full operation of all units planned by 2028. |
