Description

Description

Built hope in the land of desertThe Al-Sanabil substation is located in the outskirts of the western part of Jeddah, the most commercial city in Saudi Arabia. To solve power shortage in the nearby industrial region and downtown, Hyundai E&C newly constructed a substation and remodeled the existing power plant/substation. As an EPC contractor, Hyundai E&C performed design, material supply, construction, and test run. Unlike other substation constructions, the project applied the gas-insulated bus duct technology in connecting a transformer and GIS to improve system stability and constructional efficiency. The existing cable connection method always required a tunnel work to ground cables. With this technology, the interruption between processes were reduced without tunnel work by connecting a cable to the ground through a conductor. Simultaneously, the new method made a big contribution in achieving accident-free in all processes by improving the construction quality. Moreover, the methodology demonstrated its excellence in maintenance. It was also easy to secure material and construct and take swift measure in the occurrence of issue, so the technology had a big advantage in terms of the operation of substation.  Built a city free of blackout issueThe Jeddah area suffered from unstable power supply and frequent blackout every year due to lack of power-related facilities with increasing power consumption because of rapid economic development and population growth. However, since the completion of the substation, the area was able to receive the power from the Shuaiba II power plant 150km away from the region. Accordingly, the blackout issue was resolved in the majority of the residential area and industrial complex.
