Albany Gas Distribution System Decommissioning and Electrification Transition

The project involves the decommissioning of the Albany Gas Distribution System, a privately-owned gas network supplying around 8,000 customers with liquified petroleum gas (LPG). The network consists of approximately 160 km of gas pipelines. The decommissioning is due to the pipes nearing end-of-life and high replacement costs. The Western Australian government is providing $10.8 million to support the transition of households and businesses to electrification or alternative energy sources, including $9 million for social housing and $1.8 million for planning and community transition support. A working group has been formed to guide the decommissioning stages and customer support.
