Description
Description | The objective of the Alexandria Coastal Zone Management Project (under the investment fund for the Mediterranean Sea large marine ecosystem) for Egypt, Arab Republic of is to improve the institutional mechanisms for sustainable coastal zone management in Alexandria in particular to reduce land-based pollution to the Mediterranean Sea. There are three components to the project, the first component being planning, institutional capacity, and monitoring strengthening. The expected outcome is an increased capacity by the various relevant entities to manage the coastal zones in and around Alexandria in an integrated, participatory and sustainable manner, including planning, consensus building, and monitoring. The second component is the pollution reduction. The expected outcome is a reduction in the land based source of pollution entering the lake Mariout and subsequently the Mediterranean Sea through pilot pollution reduction measures. The outputs of this component include: (i) in-stream treatment (set of bio-films) in the Qalaa drains; and (ii) set of aerators in the Qalaa drains. Finally, the third component is the project management and monitoring and evaluation (M&E). The expected outcome is the completion of a monitoring and evaluation system and the documentation of the project results for the purpose of up-scaling and replication. |
