Alfa Telecom, a cellular operator in the city of Petrozavodsk was established in 1995 as a joint venture between Telecominvest (57.5%) and the Regional Electrosvyaz (42.5%). Alfa Telecom received a license to provide cellular services in the NMT-450 standard in Karelia Region with a population of 785 thousand people. The service areas included Pertozavdovsk, Kondopoga, Olonets, Kostomuksha, Ladenpohia by 1997 when it had 300 subscribers and 9 base stations connected tom. In 2001 Telecominvest sold 50.5% share in Alfa Telecom to North-West GSM (later known as MegaFon) for US$145 thousand. In November 2001 also Elektrosvyaz sold its 42.5% share in Alpha Telecom to North-West GSM for US$290 thousand and increased it’s stake in the company to 93%, and later in the year to 100% through purchasing shares from individual shareholders. Telecominvest was Northwest GSM's biggest shareholder, with a 45% stake in 2002. Alfa Telecom's NMT-450 network consisted of 11 base stations servicing 800 subscribers in mid-2002 and Alfa Telecom started providing GSM-900/1800 standard mobile services as it’s license to provide NMT-450 services have expired. In June 2002 Mobile operator MegaFon (previously Northwest GSM) sold to Delta Telecom the NMT-450 network equipment that formerly belonged to Alfa Telecom. The company currently provides GSM-900/1800 standard mobile services. Its license to provide NMT-450 services has expired.
