Description
Description | The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission plans to construct a new stretch of mainline roadway to reduce congestion and increase access and mobility through Allegheny and Stonycreek townships to the south of the Allegheny Tunnel. The project involves a 1,000-foot-wide, 250-foot-deep cut through the Allegheny Mountain Ridge, displacing 12 million cubic yards of earth. The project aims to reduce accidents, eliminate rerouting of hazardous material vehicles, and accommodate current and future traffic volumes while minimizing environmental impacts. However, it faces opposition from the Citizens To Save The Allegheny Mountain group, which advocates for building a third tunnel instead to avoid environmental damage. |
