These nine operating solar farms can power about 225,000 homes on sunny days. The company plans to build a total of 12 solar farms with a combined capacity of 1,089 MW by mid-2024, capable of powering nearly 300,000 homes. The solar arrays feature pivoting tracking systems and two-sided solar panels to maximize sunlight capture. Construction began in 2022 with nearly 1,000 local union workers. Alliant will spend over $1.5 billion on these solar farms and plans to close two coal-fired plants by 2026. Additionally, the company is investing in large-scale battery storage systems and exploring new battery technologies. |
