Alsym, Juniper 500-MWh Sodium-Ion Energy Storage Partnership

US sodium-ion battery platform Alsym Energy and California-based renewables developer Juniper Energy have joined forces to install 500 MWh of energy storage capacity primarily across California. The partnership targets deployment of Alsym’s sodium-ion technology to support transition from fire-prone lithium-ion batteries, aiming to eliminate fire risks and reduce levelised cost of storage. The project includes installation of Alsym’s Na-Series sodium-ion batteries in the Mojave Desert and other high-temperature regions, featuring passive cooling to prevent thermal runaway and simplify Balance of Plant, lowering capital expenditures. The collaboration aims to create a domestic supply chain as a lithium-free hedge against global supply chain volatility and environmental concerns. The long-term vision is to scale Alsym-powered assets across Juniper’s development pipeline.
