Description

Description

The terminal was constructed by Mexican companies and entered operation in 1994. In 1996, GATX acquired a controlling stake in the project (65%), and the project company name changed into GATX Terminal de Productos Especializados. After a major expansion in 1996, the facility increased its bulk liquid storage capacity from 33,675 to 63,600 cubic meters. The terminal is located in the Gulf Coast of Mexico, close to the largest petrochemical production area of the country (Altamira's production represent 64% of Mexico's total production of key petrochemicals). In 1999, the sponsors invested US$ 4.4 million in construction a 1.5-km rail spur connection to Mexico's railroads and the setting of new storage tanks. In early 2002 Dutch logistics and chemicals distribution company Koninklijke Vopak N.V. announced that it bought Gatx's majority interest in the chemical tank storage business of Terminal de Productos Especializados and that it would also acquire the rest of the shares from the remaining owners.
