Description | The Amritsar Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), also known as the Metro Bus, was launched in January 2019 to provide a sustainable public transport model with dedicated lanes and a fleet of buses. The system initially operated with 93 buses across a 31-km network connecting areas such as Attari Road, Verka Road, and Jalandhar Road. However, due to operational challenges, poor maintenance, political neglect, and design flaws, the service has been largely suspended with only one corridor operational and six buses running. The dedicated BRTS lanes remain non-operational and blocked, causing traffic congestion and public inconvenience. There are ongoing discussions about whether to open these lanes temporarily for public use or to revive the BRTS service through better management or PPP models. |
