Description
Description | Online exercise programs have emerged as an engaging means for people with Parkinson’s (PwP) to stay physically and mentally active, particularly in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Recent advances in technology have made specialized care more accessible for PwP, and combining exercise/physiotherapy with cognitive training has shown promise for improving both physical and cognitive outcomes. However, these approaches are still relatively early in their development; though promising, advancements in the design, gamification, frequency, intensity, and variety of exercise sessions, with participants included at the center of the design process, are needed to integrate digital therapeutics into the healthcare system. MOVE ON UP aims to develop, implement, and evaluate the efficacy of an 8-week digital exercise program for 50 PwP and a 28-hour digital multidisciplinary training program for 100 health professionals and caregivers. The exercise program will use a COM-B model as a meta- framework to improve physical activity levels, motor symptoms, balance, physical function, and quality of life. The training program will develop knowledge and skills and address perceived barriers to digital transition. The project will use a mixed-methods approach, with 5 work packages framed on the ADDIE guidelines and the Be Healthy, Be Mobile Handbook. The expert consortium includes organizations from Portugal, Greece, Malta, and Italy, and is coordinated by Egas Moniz School of Health and Science. MOVE ON UP has the potential to contribute to key Sustainable Development Goals related to health, including ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages, and building sustainable cities and communities. The project can also support the implementation of recommended policy actions outlined in the Global action plan on physical activity 2018–2030. |
