The Hydroelectric and Thermal Power Project for Colombia will provide a loan of US $4.5 million to the Central Hidroelectrica del Rio Anchicaya Limitada (CHIDRAL) to expand its power system. CHIDRAL is a Colombian corporation that constructs, owns, and operates electric power generating and transmission facilities. It primarily serves Cali, the fastest growing city in southwest Colombia. Currently, there is a great shortage of power in the Cali area with severe restrictions in place. Industrial expansion has been limited and new industries have had to install their own generating facilities. The project will help to alleviate these problems by: 1) installing a third generating unit to expand the current Anchicaya project; 2) constructing a 12,500 kw thermal power plant near Yumbo; and 3) adding switchgear and transformers to expand existing receiving substations. These new additions will expand CHIDRAL's power supply system in order to meet current consumer demands in the Cali area.
