  IFC is considering a €2.5 million A loan to Apetit (or “the Company”), a leading meat trader and processor in Kosovo. The loan would support the Company’s vertical integration into farming through the funding of 50% of Apetit’s investment into the establishment of a cattle farm and the construction of a slaughterhouse. Arable crops will also be grown as feed for the livestock. The new farm, with 1,000 head capacity, will be the largest in Kosovo and will partly substitute imports of meat into the country. It will also make Apetit the only meat operator integrated from farm to fork. Apetit was established in the 1940’s but started its current activity in the 60’s when it moved into meat trading. In the 80’s it expanded into processing and currently produces approximately 30 products including fresh meat cuts, sausages and a range of deli products. It sells to larger retailers, the government, meat specialized retailers and restaurants.  The slaughterhouse and cattle farm will be located on land next to the current meat processing facility in a town called Babimoc, about 20 Km outside of Pristina close to the town of Vushtri. The land is owned by Apetit and is currently used for arable crops. Current facilities include the meat processing unit, a small livestock stall and vehicles parking area.  Apetit intends to source calves from brokers or directly from local farmers. The animals’ diet will be a mix mostly made up of corn (approximately 50%). Corn will be grown on the same site as the cattle farm and will be harvested, cut into silage, and mixed with local sourced products such as spent grains, hay and wheat bran using agribusiness machinery. Apetit currently owns a fleet of 40 vehicles including vans and trucks. The vehicle fleet will increase with the farming operations, including the purchase of farm cultivation equipment.
