Description | In May 1996, Saneamento de Aracatuba (Sanear) was awarded a 21 year contract to build operate and transfer a sewerage treatment facility to provide service to the municipality of Aracatuba. According to the contract signed with the Department of Water and Sewer of Aracatuba (Departamento de Agua e Esgoto de Aracatuba –DAEA), Sanear was responsible for building and operating a sewerage treatment plant to raise the sewerage treatment level for Aracatuba (state of Sao Paulo) from 20% to 100%. Sanear was formed by Resil (grupo Sacyr Vallehermoso), 52%; Grupo Tejofran, Amafi Comercial e Construtora and Earth Tech (a subsidiary of Tyco). Sanear was expected to invest US$ 11.6 million (R$ 17 million) in the construction and operation of the treatment plant. The construction works were underway as of December 1998 and Sanear started operations in January 2000. As of December 2002, the company had already complied with its investment commitments.
