Arkhangelsk Mobile Networks provides mobile services in the Arkhangelsk Region with a population of 1.5 million and currently provides coverage to the cities of Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk, Novodvinsk and other cities in the region. Arkhangelsk mobile network received its license to operate a 800 Mhz AMPS cellular network in July 1995. The company was created as a closed joint stock company by US West (Media One International) and the local operator. The company started its operations on January 1996. By the end of 1997, the company had 300 subscribers. Luncent Technologies supplied the equipment. In 2000, MediaOne sold its subsidiary RTDC to MCT Corp. From 2000 Arkhangelsk Mobile Networks has been 100% owned by MCT Corp. Arkhangelsk Mobile Networks provided service under the brand name INDIGO, introduced in May 2001 by MCT Corp. uniting some 13 operators in Russia and CIS. The company also holds GSM 1800 license. GSM network was expected to be launched in the second quarter of 2004. Huawei Technologies supplied the equipment. In June 2006 Tele2 purchased 100% of Vostok Mobile Northwest BV from MCT Corp. This deal gave Tele2 control over ZAO Arkhangelsk Mobile Networks, ZAO Novgorod Telecommunications, ZAO Murmansk Mobile Network and Parma Mobile (Komi Republic).
